NO2
Nitrogen dioxide
What is it?
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is an air pollutant in gaseous form. It is a compound of two oxygen atoms and one nitrogen atom and one of several nitrogen oxides.
Where does it come from?
NO2 is emitted by internal combustion engines, such as petrol and diesel cars.
Why is it harmful?
Exposure to NO2 can irritate the lining of the lungs and exacerbates conditions such as asthma and emphysema. Long-term exposure has been shown to decrease lung function, and negatively affect the liver and spleen. Children exposed to NO2 are more likely to be admitted to hospital with asthma.
When does it cause the most harm?
High concentrations of NO2 are associated with high volumes of traffic durign rush hour periods. Everyday exposure to NO2 occurs if people are living, walking, cycling or driving in and near traffic. In-car exposure to NO2 also poses a significant health risk.
