O3

Ozone 3

What is it?

Ozone is a highly reactive gas composed of three oxygen atoms. While Ozone is an important barrier against harmful UV radiation in the upper atmosphere, ground-level ozone is an air pollutant of health concern.

Where does it come from?

Ground-level ozone forms when other air pollutants (Nitrogen Oxides NOx and Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs) in the air react with sunlight.

Why is it harmful?

Ozone is a powerful oxidant that can irritate the lungs and airways. Depending on how much is present in the air, it can cause breathing difficulties, coughing and a sore throat.

Long-term exposure can aggravate lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.

When does it cause the most harm?

Air pollution from ozone is most common in cities during the summer months.
